The Untold Story of Darth Bane: The Sith Who Created the Rule of Two
Feb 9, 2025
The Sith Order has produced some of the most feared and powerful beings in the Star Wars universe. While many Sith Lords sought power and conquest, few changed the fate of the Sith forever.
One such Sith was Darth Bane, the architect of the Rule of Two—the doctrine that ensured the survival of the Sith for generations.
In this blog, we will explore:
✔ Who was Darth Bane?
✔ Why did he destroy the Sith Order?
✔ How his Rule of Two shaped the future of the Sith
✔ His legacy in Star Wars history
Who Was Darth Bane?
Darth Bane was born as Dessel, a miner on the war-torn planet Apatros. Raised in harsh conditions, he despised weakness and learned to survive in a cruel and violent world.
✔ He discovered his connection to the dark side at an early age.
✔ He killed his abusive father using the Force without realizing it.
✔ He joined the Sith Brotherhood of Darkness, an order of Sith that had abandoned the Rule of Two.
However, Bane soon realized the Sith were weak—they had become too many, constantly betraying one another, and had lost the true power of the Dark Side.
Darth Bane Destroys the Sith
The Sith Brotherhood of Darkness, led by Lord Kaan, believed in equal power among all Sith, but Bane saw their flawed philosophy as their greatest weakness.
✔ He studied ancient Sith knowledge, realizing that true Sith power must be concentrated, not divided.
✔ He manipulated the Sith into using a superweapon, the Thought Bomb, which wiped out the entire Sith Brotherhood on the planet Ruusan.
✔ Bane alone survived, ensuring that he would be the only Sith Lord left.
With the old Sith Order destroyed, Bane created a new rule—The Rule of Two.
The Rule of Two: A New Sith Order
"Always two there are—no more, no less. A master and an apprentice."
With this philosophy, Bane ensured that:
✔ The Sith would always operate in secrecy.
✔ The apprentice would learn everything from the master and one day surpass them.
✔ Only the strongest Sith would survive, making the Sith more powerful than ever before.
He trained Darth Zannah, his apprentice, to one day kill him and continue the Sith lineage—a tradition that would last for over a thousand years, leading to the rise of Darth Sidious and Darth Vader.
The Death of Darth Bane
In true Sith tradition, Bane and Zannah eventually fought to the death.
✔ Bane believed he was too powerful to be defeated.
✔ Zannah proved herself as the stronger Sith, defeating Bane in combat.
✔ Some believe Bane attempted to transfer his essence into Zannah’s body, but she resisted and claimed the title of Sith Lord.
Thus, Bane’s Rule of Two continued, ensuring the ultimate survival of the Sith until the rise of Darth Sidious, Darth Maul, and Darth Vader.
The Legacy of Darth Bane
Darth Bane’s influence shaped the Sith for generations. His Rule of Two led directly to the fall of the Jedi Order, as Darth Sidious ultimately manipulated the Republic and created the Galactic Empire.
✔ Without Darth Bane, the Sith would have died out long before Palpatine’s rise.
✔ He ensured that only the strongest Sith would survive, making the Sith more powerful over time.
✔ His name became legend, and his teachings were studied by Sith Lords for centuries.
To this day, Darth Bane remains one of the most important Sith Lords in Star Wars history.
